Ocean Week Canada Community Event Grant
Identified as a priority in the Canadian Ocean Literacy Strategy, COLC launched its Ocean Literacy Community Grants program in 2023. Under this program, to date, there have been 3 types of grants awarded, including the Ocean Week Canada Community Events Grant, the Blue Creators Grant, and the Blue Schools Canada Experiential Learning Grant.
Do you have an idea for an exciting event or activity, but need a bit of funding support to help make it happen? Or maybe you already have some of the funding you need for your event, but now you want to engage even more people. If either of these sound like you, we encourage you to apply when applications open for 2025!
Eligibility and Scope
In 2024, COLC awarded 49 grants totalling over $111,800 to community groups across the country to support a wide range of Ocean Week Canada events (Up to $2500 per event)
Events included:
- Ocean-themed festivals
- Presentations, talks, film Screenings
- Recreational ocean activities/lessons
- Musical performances/performing arts
- Educational & Interpretative explorations
- Storytelling, book readings/launches
- Live art interactive demonstrations
- Water testing, beach cleanups with post-event trash analysis/artistic creations/etc.
- Other engaging ideas!
To be considered for the Ocean Week Canada Event Grant, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Applicant must be 16 years of age or older.
- Applicant must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and currently living somewhere in Canada.
- Applicant must be leading an event/activity taking place in communities in Canada, for audiences in Canada.
- Applicant must submit a completed application.
The application link will be available when the grants for 2025 are live!
- The call for funding applications will usually open in January and will close February. The event being proposed must happen sometime between June 1 and 8, 2024 (or in the weeks leading up to Ocean Week Canada).
- The online application form will less than an hour minutes to complete. Be sure to complete all fields.

Across geographies and generations, Ocean Week Canada 2024 saw nearly 400 events take place in all provinces and territories. Throughout these events, culture, language, knowledge systems, and history were celebrated in unique ways, all made possible thanks to our regional hub coordinators, partners, event hosts, and dedicated community members.
