STEM for a Thriving Future: Integrating Well-being and Sustainability into Education

In a world facing complex challenges like climate change, social inequities, and resource depletion, it is more crucial than ever to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values to create a sustainable and thriving future. This presentation explores how educators can foster a culture of well-being and sustainability through STEM education.

The core of the presentation will focus on practical strategies and activities for educators to integrate well-being and sustainability into their teaching. We will discuss (time permitting):

  • Curriculum Integration: Reorienting education for sustainability by weaving these concepts into STEM subjects and engaging learners in real-world issues through project-based learning. (STEM+)
  • Experiential Learning: Encouraging community-based projects opportunities for students to apply STEM skills and knowledge to address local sustainability challenges.
  • Critical Dialogue: Facilitating debates and discussions on challenging topics (hard topics that arouse strong emotions and polarize) related to STEM, sustainability, and equity, encouraging students to critically examine their own values and perspectives.
  • Building Partnerships: Establishing collaborations with community organisations, businesses, and research institutions to support student projects, mentorship, and resource access.
