This event will spotlight the vital role of strategic communications in bridging the gap between ocean science, public engagement, and policy action. Attendees will be inspired by real-world examples of strategic communications in action, including the use of resources developed through the Advancing Strategic Ocean Communication Project. The session will also share key findings from recent Ocean Science Survey (OSS) research conducted across 12 countries, offering fresh insights into public perceptions and messaging effectiveness. To catalyze future efforts, the session will convene philanthropic foundations to identify priority areas for investment and collaboration in the lead-up to upcoming global ocean conferences. The goal is to inspire greater support and funding for strategic communication projects that can drive meaningful change.
As lead author of the Ocean Decade Challenge 10 White Paper, COLC’s Executive Director, Diz Glithero, is presenting on the importance of bridging strategic communications and ocean literacy professional communities to drive public engagement and transformative action.
This panel will introduce the Advancing Strategic Ocean Communication project, a collaborative, research-led initiative developing ocean-climate communication guidance. It will highlight the vital role of integrated, strategic communications in policy, advocacy, and public engagement to support the implementation of SDG 14. The event will explore the open-access resources developed by the project and the importance of a JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) approach to reshape narratives and ensure fair, inclusive ocean storytelling. Attendees will learn from lessons, challenges, and opportunities to join a growing global network of ocean communicators.
